Dibbs (part one)

It was a scorching summer day. The air that blasted from the vents was welcomed by all four of the car's passengers. Traffic was holding strong after the lunch break rush, making the drive slower and longer than expected. The children seated in back were sweat sticky and growing sleepy. The "mews" that came from within the carrier set on the passenger seat grew louder and more frequent despite calming words from the driver.
The small boy strapped into his seat talked himself out of drowsiness and into the need for a potty break. A detour was set by the driver to the office of the children's father. Prompted by a phone call the father came to escort his son to the restroom. As he arrived at the car he was happily surprised to see the black and white ball of fluff contained by the carrier. He giggled a "hello" and twiddled his fingers toward the restless and reluctant passenger. He and the son skipped off toward the building while the driver stayed, listening to soft snores from the back seat and scritching and scratching from the carrier.
With the aim to soothe, the driver gave the mass of fur a break from the carrier, by holding him securely in her arms. He answered with a strong motoring purr of approval. The driver watched as the father and son returned, giant smiles on both their faces...
